Oceanography Division

 

The Oceanography Division is responsible for organizing and executing oceanographic research on behalf of the Navy and for creating the proper infrastructure for the dissemination of all relevant data.

The mission of the division is:

  • To conduct oceanographic surveys in the Hellenic Seas and the adjacent waters like the Eastern Mediterranean,  embodying the results in the relevant studies. The surveys are done with the oceanographic vessels of Hydrographic Service in the areas of physical, chemical and geological oceanography for various areas of interest. All data that is gathered is used for the environmental support of the Hellenic Navy. Also, the Department is responsible for the collection and processing of expendable bathythermographs and other useful observations that are made by other ships of the Navy.
  • To support Hellenic Navy and other national defense bodies by providing the necessary data and information for the tactical exploitation of the marine environment.
  • To provide data and information and conduct oceanographic surveys on behalf of third parties both from the public and private sector.
  • To predict the wave field in Hellenic waters. 
  • To measure sea level using a permanent network of 21 tide stations.
